Kshar may be any substance that has corrosive property and alkaline nature. The alkalinity is measured by the pH scale paper that may be more than 7 to 14.
Although Kshar is present in every plant yet it is used in the preparation Kshar Sutra is obtained from the plant apamarg (Achyranthus aspera) commonly called Chirchita or Latjeera as shown fig.
Apamarg plants rooted when they are fully matured in the month of December to March and dried in Sunlight.
Burning the dry Apamarg plant ash is obtained and it dissolved in 4-6 times of water solution is obtained and filtered.
Finally Kshar is obtained from Kshar containing filtrate by the process of evaporation in the form of crust which is powdered with the help of Mortar and pestle as shown in fig.
Kshar is alkaline in nature with pH 10.5 which is measured with the help of pH scale paper.
It performs the surgical actions such as excision, incision, drainage and scrapping.
It destroys the unhealthy tissues and debrides of the wound and promotes the process of healing.
It also destroys the fibrous tissues and acts as a fibrolytic agent.
