Preparation of Kshar Sutra

  • Kshar Sutra is a medicated thread which is prepared by Apamarg plant Kshar (Achyranthus aspera) commonly called Chirchita or Latjeera as shown in fig1. , is obtained by above process, Snuhi Ksheer (the latex of Euphorbia nerifolia) commonly called Thoohar or senhund as shown in fig2. and Haridra powder (rhyzomes of Curcuma longa) commonly called Haldi or Hardi as shown in fig 3.

  • Snuhi Ksheer is obtained freshly as required from the Snuhi plant to incised the plant stem with help of sclpel.Latex oozes out drop by drop which is collected in the pot.
  • It is best preferably collected in the months of September to November and february to March.
  • It should be collected before sun rise.
  • It is coagulated in about 2 hours so it sould be used as soon as possible.
  • To overcome this problem small amount of Apamarg Kshar is put in the pot in which Snuhi Ksheer is collected and pot should be shaking continuosly.
  • Haridra powder is obtained from rhyzomes of Tumeric which is marketed.
  • These are thoroughly washed with clean water and put in Sunlight in dust free atmosphere through covering a clean fine cloth.
  • Then these are grinded to very fine powder and is kept in the air tight container.
  • Kshar Sutra preparation required surgical linen thread 20 no. but I used strong cotton thread vardhman cotton 20 no. in this purpose as shown in fig4., Wooden rectangular frames as shown in fig5. and specially disigned Kshar Sutra Cabinet as shown in fig6. and fig.7.

  • Wooden rectangular frames of size measuring 38 x 50 cm. are taken. A hook is fitted in the middle of upper arm and side arms are notched at 3.0 cm. interval to anchor the cotton thread as shown in fig8.
  • Kshar Sutra Cabinet is a vertical box which is made up of ply wood measuring 46x46x126 cm as shown in fig6 &7.
  • It has three chambers of which two upper and middle chamber are used to put corresponding items and lower third chamber is used as Kshar Sutra Cabinet which is entirly coated with aluminium thin sheet.
  • In the upper side of this chamber a aluminium rod and a electric bulb holder is fixed.
  • Electric bulb holder with 100 watt bulb is connected to electric socket from back side of the kshar Sutra Cabinet by which it is connected to electric circuit.
  • To prepare the Kshar Sutra the thread is wrapped on the frames that is coated with Snuhi Ksheer 11 times, Snuhi Ksheer along with Apamarg Kshar 7 times and Snuhi Ksheer along with Haridra powder 3 times.
  • After each coating frames are put in sunlight in dust free atmoshphere for drying then these are hanged with the help of hook to aluminium rod and bulb is switched on for about 2 hours to maintain the temperature and sterilize with 100 watt bulb which emits Ultra Voilet rays (source).
  • Finally Kshar Sutra are cut into pieces of appropriate sizes and packed in plastic bags and sealed with the help of sealing machine.
  • Now packed Kshar Sutra are ready to use as shown in fig9. fig.10. fig.11.
